Policies and procedures

ATSU strives to foster a culture of innovation by championing scholarly outcomes, providing a progressive infrastructure for conducting mission-focused scholarly activity, and facilitating stakeholder engagement. To that end, Research, Grants & Scholarly Innovation creates and advances institutional policies, programs, and oversight practices.

Sponsored project administration requires a thorough understanding of ATSU policies and procedures and how they complement, reinforce, and integrate with government regulations and sponsor requirements. A range of policies and procedures exist for requesting, accepting, and managing external and internal funding in the conduct of sponsored projects. Other University policies help to incentivize scholarly research activity.

  • Financial conflict of interest policy+

    • ATSU meets the requirements of the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 42, Chapter I, Subchapter D, Part 50, Subpart F—Promoting Objectivity in Research and Title 45, Subtitle A, Subchapter A, Part 94—Responsible Prospective Contractors. These regulations establish standards for institutions that apply for or receive research funding from the US Department of Health and Human Services—Public Health Service. ATSU's Financial Conflict of Interest (FCOI) policy is posted on the institution’s external website and applies to all investigators at ATSU and to all ATSU research where the activity is sponsored or, if non-sponsored, involves human subjects.

  • ATSU regulatory compliance review+

    • The University is required by law to assure all research projects (sponsored or not) comply with federal regulations. The three major regulated areas that require institutional review and approval are: 1) human experimentation, 2) animal use, and 3) use of hazardous materials.

Applications involving human, animal, and/or hazardous materials use require thorough regulatory committee review, which may take several weeks to complete. As soon as possible in advance of the proposal deadline, the investigator must seek the guidance of the appropriate Institutional Review Board (IRB) and potentially related Animal Care and/or Biohazard Committees.
