Sixty physical therapy students at the Arizona School of Health Sciences volunteered at this year’s Desert Challenge Regional Games, held April 24-26 in Mesa, Ariz. This event marked the 14th year of ASHS’ involvement in the games.

The Desert Challenge Regional Games, an Olympic-style competition for athletes with physical disabilities, included swimming, weightlifting, archery, and track and field events for more than 50 participants. The students spotted weightlifters, timed swimmers and runners, counted points for archery, and set up event sites.

“I think this event is important on so many levels. It provides athletes with disabilities a chance to compete and show others the level of their accomplishments,” said Deanne Fay, M.S., PT, PCS, assistant professor of physical therapy. “Every year I see the students motivated by what they see. Usually they are in awe by the true athletic abilities of the individuals participating. Many of the students talk about how they will look for similar events in the communities where they end up, making sure patients are aware of the opportunities available.”
