Open Access Week Highlights
Posted: October 23, 2024During the week of Oct. 21-27, A.T. Still Memorial Library celebrates International Open Access Week.
What is Open Access?
Open Access refers to the free, immediate, and unrestricted online availability of research outputs such as journal articles, theses, data sets, and other scholarly works. Unlike traditional publishing models, Open Access allows anyone to access and benefit from high-quality research without the barriers of paywalls or subscriptions. This movement promotes wider dissemination of knowledge, enabling more equitable access to information, regardless of institutional affiliation or geographic location.
While there’s a vast landscape to explore in the realm of open access, the library has decided upon four key areas for our focus during Open Access Week:
- Journal Publishing Agreements: Understanding the terms and conditions of journal publishing can significantly impact access to your research. ATSU has you covered with agreements with four publishers at no cost to you.
- LibKey Nomad: Discover this powerful browser extension that can help you bypass paywalls and gain immediate access to full-text articles.
- Still ScholarWorks: Explore our institutional repository as a valuable resource for finding open access content from ATSU’s own faculty and researchers.
- Google Scholar: Leverage this comprehensive search engine to locate scholarly articles, including many that are freely available.
Journal Publishing Agreements:
Did you just finish a research project and want to publish it in a journal? Don’t know what journal to publish in? Don’t want to pay the high publication fees? Well, you are in luck; as an additional benefit to our faculty, students, and staff, the A.T. Still Memorial Library has entered into several agreements that enable ATSU-affiliated researchers to publish open access at no charge with the following publishers: Cambridge, Springer, Wiley, and BMJ Case Reports.
Some examples of top journals from these publishers that are part of the library agreement are:
- Journal of Clinical Periodontology
- Sports Medicine
- Medical Education
- Occupational Therapy International
- Journal of Internal Medicine
- Journal of Child Language
- Language Learning
- European Journal of Dental Education
- Oral Radiology
- Research in Higher Education
- Health & Social Care in the Community
- Journal of Public Health Policy
- Journal of Physiology
- Advances in Medicine
LibKey Nomad:
LibKey Nomad is an innovative browser extension on Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge designed to simplify your research process by providing instant access to full-text articles from your library’s subscriptions, open-access sources, and more — all while you browse the web. With LibKey Nomad, there’s no need to navigate multiple websites or log in repeatedly to get the research you need. One click on PubMed or journal publisher sites takes you to the article. The video above will highlight how to install the extension on your browser and show you how easy it is to use with PubMed and Google Scholar.
