Escape the Room… with Your Citation Skills!
Looking to boost your citation knowledge in a fun and interactive way? Our library has you covered with a series of escape room-style tutorials designed to help you learn and practice citation formats like APA and AMA. These aren’t your typical citation guides—each escape room is packed with puzzles, clues, and challenges that test your understanding as you go.
One of our most popular activities for our ATSU-ASHS and ATSU-CGHS students is the APA Escape Room. As you work your way through the storyline, you’ll explore the ins and outs of APA citation style—learning how to format references, structure in-text citations, and avoid common mistakes. It’s a great way to reinforce your skills, whether you’re new to APA or just need a refresher.
We also offer an AMA Escape Room, perfect for our ATSU-ASHS PA, ATSU-SOMA, and ATSU-KCOM students. Just like the APA version, this tutorial walks you through the core elements of AMA style in a hands-on, engaging format.
Read the beginning of the tutorial below to understand how you’ll need to escape:
You have been working on your paper for your class most of the afternoon and time got away from you. You start packing up to head home and the panic sets in when you remember that you did not create a reference page and had questions about your in-text citations. Looking around you noticed that the librarians are gone and so you head for the door and the library is locked.
Next thing you see a note slide under the door
“To help you with your reference and in-text citations you will need to unlock 8 different locks and the library doors will open so you can head home. You have 45 minutes to accomplish your task.”
You have a working computer with you! Use the clues to cite your sources and escape!

These escape rooms are ideal for individual learning, classroom use, or even as a friendly challenge among peers. Whether you’re preparing for an assignment or just want to test your citation skills in a creative way, these tutorials are a great resource.
Faculty members: These escape rooms can also be embedded into your courses or linked in your syllabi. They’re a great supplement to instruction on citation styles and help reinforce academic integrity in a fun, student-centered format.
