Kirksville students participate in first Family Health Fair
Posted: May 9, 2017Student volunteers from A.T. Still University’s Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (ATSU-KCOM) and the Missouri School of Dentistry & Oral Health (ATSU-MOSDOH) provided free screenings to community members during the first Family Health Fair on April 22.
The event, held at William Matthew Middle School, was sponsored by ATSU-KCOM’s Primary Care Training and Enhancement Grant and Northeast Missouri Area Health Education Centers (NEMO AHEC). Community members of all ages attended. Medical students checked patients’ pulse, respiratory rate, and blood pressure, while ATSU-MOSDOH students provided oral health education. Volunteers and community organizations distributed informational literature on nutrition, chronic disease management, and health careers.
In addition to learning about health and wellness, attendees enjoyed family-friendly games and activities, including a puppet show.
Several student organizations provided volunteers for the event, including the Undergraduate Chapter of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians, the American College of Osteopathic Pediatricians, DOCare International, and Still Caring Health Connection.
Planning is underway for a second event in spring of 2018. For more information, contact NEMO AHEC at 660.665.6404.
