A.T. Still University’s (ATSU) Division of Research, Grants & Scholarly Innovations recently announced the funding of 13 new intramural grant projects, with awards totaling over $143,000.
Winning proposals and grant amounts for the Warner/Fermaturo & the ATSU Board of Trustees, Research Fund are:
– “Effects of Vitamin D3 on Intestine Epithelial Barrier Function,” $10,000, by Suhail Akhtar, PhD, ATSU-Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (KCOM) Biochemistry.
– “Cell Culture Model of Progression and Resolution of Alcoholic Liver Disease,” $10,000, by Michael Bradbury, PhD, ATSU-KCOM Biochemistry.
– “Reaction and Movement Time in Women with Breast-Cancer Related Lymphedema: A Cross-Sectional Study with Comparison,” $10,000, by David Doubblestein, PT, PhD, ATSU-Arizona School of Health Sciences (ASHS) Physical Therapy, and Katherine Jones, OTR/L, ATSU-ASHS Occupational Therapy.
– “The Effect of Anti-TNF-α Therapy on the Progression of Post-Traumatic Knee Joint Osteoarthritis Caused by Medial Meniscus Destabilization in a Rat Model,” $10,000, by Peter Kondrashov, PhD, ATSU-KCOM Anatomy, and William Brechue, PhD, ATSU-KCOM Physiology.

– “Investigation of the Role of Melatonin as a Potential Treatment for Hyperhomocysteinemia and Age-related Macular Degeneration in Primary Human Donor Retinal Pigmented Epithelial Cells,” $10,000, by Shanu Markand, PhD, ATSU-KCOM Anatomy.
– “Exploring the Educational Opportunities Related to Social Determinants of Health Provided by Professional Athletic Training Programs,” $5,484, by Kelsey Picha, PhD, AT, ATSU-ASHS Interdisciplinary Health Sciences; Bailey Jones, PhD, AT, fellow, ATSU Research Support; Alison Valier, PhD, AT, FNATA; and Cailee Welch Bacon, PhD, AT, ATSU-ASHS Athletic Training.
