Rebecca Schaffer, DDS, adjunct professor at A.T. Still University’s Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health (ATSU-ASDOH), received a travel grant to attend the World Federation of Hemophilia’s (WFH) Africa Summit 2019 on Hemophilia and Other Rare Bleeding Disorders. The summit will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa Sept. 3-4, 2019.
Dr. Schaffer, a renowned expert in treating patients with hemophilia, is the North American delegate to WFH’s Dental Committee. The purpose of the summit is to develop treatment protocols for people with bleeding disorders on the African continent. Dr. Schaffer’s role is to establish guidelines for dental treatment and oral health maintenance in this population.
Dr. Schaffer has devoted her career to caring for medically complex patients with special needs. She was inspired to treat patients with bleeding disorders in the early days of the HIV epidemic when many people contracted the virus through blood transfusions.
“I am honored to represent ATSU, the U.S., and dental professionals at the African Hemophilia Summit,” says Dr. Schaffer. “I sincerely hope my presence will contribute to improved outcomes for people with bleeding disorders on the African continent.”
