ATSU-KCOM students gain knowledge in pediatrics lab

A.T. Still University-Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (ATSU-KCOM) students recently expanded their experiences with younger patients during a pediatrics lab.
The lab, now in its fourth year, provides second-year ATSU-KCOM students an opportunity to work with children of different ages, while also rotating through stations to learn about procedures they could encounter in a pediatric emergency room.
“They see the broad spectrum of what pediatrics can really be,” said Julie Hessler, DO, ’96, assistant professor, family medicine.
Dr. Hessler said it’s important for students to gain experiences with children of different ages, as they’re likely to encounter a wide range of ages in a pediatric practice.
“With pediatrics, I think a lot of students aren’t aware it goes from newborn up to age 21,” Dr. Hessler said. “We try to have a wide variety of ages here so the students can talk to them, see developmental milestones, plot them on the growth chart, listen to hearts, and see variations in physical exams.”
