A.T. Still University-Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (ATSU-KCOM) student Tyler Coolman, OMS IV, has been named Alumni Fund Scholarship Award recipient by the Institute for International Medicine (INMED).
According to the post on INMEDBLOG.us, Coolman’s award will help him complete a service-learning experience at Clinica Esperanza in Honduras.
“Helping Honduran patients with chronic rashes and wounds on their hands and feet to be able to return to work and maintain their livelihood will be my goal while in Honduras,” Coolman told INMED. “By completing the INMED Diploma program I will have given myself my best chance of developing into the dermatologist and public health enthusiast I hope to be.”
Coolman had already participated in INMED’s Professional Certificate Course in International Medicine & Public Health after an undergraduate experience in Nicaragua and Costa Rica. It was there he saw firsthand the how resources and access determine many healthcare outcomes.
“Not only did the INMED course refresh several of the tenets of public health I learned during my graduate studies, its tailored training for working and practicing internationally reminded me of my first service-learning experience in Nicaragua and Costa Rica,” Coolman told INMED. “I appreciated learning how to approach practicing medicine in resource-limited settings, where basic diagnostic tools and treatments might not be available.”
