ATSU hosts National Primary Care Week activities

Each October, A.T. Still University’s Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (ATSU-KCOM) hosts several events in celebration of National Primary Care Week. During this time, proponents of family medicine celebrate their discipline while encouraging others to pursue a career in the field.
On Monday, Oct. 14, the Missouri campus hosted a National Health Service Corps panel presentation. Panel members included Margaret Wilson, DO, ’82, dean, ATSU-KCOM; Joni Adamson, MBA, manager of recruitment and workforce development, Missouri Primary Care Association; Brent Speak, DO, ’05, assistant professor and chair, obstetrics, gynecology, and women’s health, ATSU-KCOM. The Missouri Primary Care Association provided lunch for attendees during the presentation.
Students were also able to attend a screening of the documentary “The Providers” on Wednesday, Oct. 16. The documentary discussed the crucial role that healthcare providers play in serving the underserved in rural America. The screening was followed by refreshments and a discussion lead by Patricia Sexton, DHEd, associate dean for curriculum, ATSU-KCOM.
The week concluded with a lunch provided by the National Osteopathic Women Physicians Association, where Jennifer Blacksmith, PhD, HSPP, NCSP, director, Northeast Missouri Behavioral Health at Northeast Missouri Health Council, gave a presentation discussing adverse childhood experiences.
