ATSU hosts annual Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research Symposium

On Saturday, Nov. 11, A.T. Still University’s (ATSU) Kirksville, Missouri campus hosted the annual Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research Symposium (IBRS). This event is hosted by the A.T. Still Research Institute, and it gives students, residents, faculty, and regional researchers the opportunity to present their current biomedical research and provides a foundation for promoting collaborative biomedical research. The IBRS consists of oral presentations, poster presentations, and a keynote speaker.
There were 11 oral presentations, 40 poster presentations, and more than 100 in attendance for the event. The IBRS included participation from faculty, staff, and students from ATSU and Truman State University. They also received participation from staff at Northeast Regional Medical Center and from other various members of the Kirksville community.
Winners are listed below:
- Overall competition winner – Stephen Passmeyer, Truman State University student
- Sigma Xi sponsored Outstanding Research Award- Peter Windsor, Truman State University student
- Neil Sargentini, PhD Memorial Award for Outstanding Biomedical Research – Zachary Siress, second-year biomed student
- Outstanding Research Awards – Hiba Syed, second-year biomed student; Hannah Vetter, OMS II, Elyse Curry, second-year biomed student
In addition to the students, faculty members were also recognized. Priscilla Phillips, PhD, assistant professor, microbiology/immunology; Deb Hudman, MS, senior research associate, microbiology/immunology; Bruce Young, PhD, associate professor, anatomy; and William Brechue, PhD, chair, physiology; all received award certificates for outstanding research.
The Neil J. Sargentini, PhD, Memorial Keynote Address was presented by John Schousboe, MD, MS, PhD, CCD. Dr. Schousboe presented on the necessity of clinician scientists. A video memorial tribute to Dr. Sargentini was played following the keynote address.
