ATSU honors achievements, anniversaries with Missouri campus employee award ceremony
Posted: March 27, 2023A.T. Still University (ATSU) hosted its annual Missouri campus Employee Recognition & Award Ceremony on March 23, 2023, honoring outstanding achievements and employment anniversaries.
ATSU’s Kirksville, Missouri, campus’ Distinguished Service Award went to Alan Coonfield, coordinator, animal care, ATSU-Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (ATSU-KCOM).
Nominators submitted the following comments in support of Coonfield’s selection:
- Mr. Coonfield has proven himself to be an asset to ATSU. He has worked constantly to better the facility and ensure that the Animal Care Facility is continually evaluated and improved to meet the guidelines of care and use of research animals. He has been a strong advocate for animal health and welfare while meeting the needs of ATSU researchers who work with live animals. Under his supervision, the Animal Care Facility has maintained accreditation and compliance with guidelines and regulations.
- When staff is unable to report to work, Mr. Coonfield has stepped up on holiday, weekend, and late-night shifts. He personally transports animals and delivers supplies to Pls. His ethics and compassion are evident in his work.
- Alan is the gatekeeper of information, providing training and continuing education to ATSU students, staff, faculty, and researchers.
- Alan Coonfield has been an essential employee of A.T. Still University for many years.

ATSU-KCOM Dean Margaret Wilson, DO, ’82, presented the A.T. Still Staff Awards for Excellence in Teaching for Basic Sciences to William Brechue, PhD, professor, chair, physiology, and for Clinical to Valena Fiscus, DO, MPH, assistant professor, internal medicine.
ATSU-Missouri Dentistry & Oral Health (ATSU-MOSDOH) Dean Dwight McLeod, DDS, was joined by Elsie Gaber, PhD, EdS, MEd, in presenting the Elsie Gaber Compassion & Integrity Award to Brooke Robinson, MPA, director student success, administration.
ATSU-College of Graduate Health Studies (ATSU-CGHS) Dean Marisa Hastie, EdD, ACSM EP-C, PN1, FACSM, presented the Michael Samuels Impact Award to Jaana Gold, DDS, PhD, MPH, CPH, professor (tenure), master of public health – dental emphasis, the Outstanding Employee Award to Vera Bannerman, MBA, academic advisor, administration, and the Professor of the Year Award to Greg Loeben, PhD, MA, associate professor, master of public health.
