Know Before You Go
Pre-Reads
The articles below are optional pre-reads to provide participants with some context for providing OMT in patient care. These are not required, but have been made available based on requests from prior attendees.
- When to Consider Osteopathic Manipulation
- The Core Principles of Osteopathic Philosophy
- Proposed Tenets of Osteopathic Medicine and Principles for Patient Care
- Strain Counterstrain: Current Concepts and Clinical Evidence
For those wanting to get a head start, the following presentation slides might be helpful:
- Introduction to Osteopathic Principles and Practices (Slides 39-53)
- Counterstrain of the Thoracic Spine – Posterior (Slides 8-12, 25, 26, 45)
- Muscle Energy Technique of the Thoracic Spine (Slides 17-21)
Recommended Attire
Each workshop session will involve hands-on practice where participants will perform osteopathic manipulative treatments (OMT) on each other. We highly recommend wearing clothing that is comfortable and modest, while also allowing you to perform OMT techniques with ease and serve as a model patient for other participants. Clothing materials such as denim and heavy canvas can make it difficult for beginners to palpate somatic dysfunction. Wearing lightweight fabrics can improve your partner’s ability to palpate during OMT activities. Suggested clothing options include t-shirts or polo shirts (with a sports bra for ladies) and scrub pants, sweat pants, or leggings. Jewelry should be limited to items that will not interfere with manipulation. Long hair should be pulled back and secured.
Other Helpful Information
Lunch will be provided daily, along with light snacks.
