Mr. Potter is currently on antibiotics (trimethiprim / sulfamethoxazole, SeptraŽ) that should prevent Pneumocytis carinii infection. If Paul was infected with Pneumocytis carinii then the bronchoalveolar lavage would have contained single celled cysts when stained with Giemsa or silver stains.
