With Streptococcus pneumoniae Mr. Potter would appear more toxic (more lethargic, poorer color, slower mentation, etc.). The high fever (103o F) would have been consistent but Mr. Potter didn't exhibit the shaking chills you generally see with Streptococcus pneumoniae. Mr. Potter would have had blood-tinged sputum and the bronchoalveolar lavage would have revealed many gram positive, lancet-shaped diplococci.
