The four major groups are:

• Enterotoxigenic; cramps, nausea, and vomiting,
• Enteroinvasive; fever, cramps, blood, and leukocytes in the stool
• Enteropathogenic; diarrhea
• Enterohemorrhagic; severe abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea (E.coli O157:H7).
