DAT Life Moment | Lilia G.

Shadow

I always knew I wanted to be a healthcare provider from a young age, but I wanted it to be in a diverse setting. Athletic training was my career of choice because I knew there were many routes I could explore within the profession. After my undergraduate degree I was in clinical practice for seven fabulous years. Life happens and family became a priority, so I transitioned to teach health science in a secondary setting. The sports medicine persona in me was always the driving force behind my teaching.

After 10 years, with my children now grown, and with a master’s in psychology, I decided it was time to return to my calling. I started to look into Doctor of Athletic Training (DAT) programs and A.T. Still University’s DAT program really stood out to me. I loved that I had a choice in pursuing tracks that were of interest, the flexibility of the program, and most of all the curriculum on offer. Being in the DAT program has allowed me to grow personally and professionally, and I have become a better clinician. I am able to provide quality care to my patients.

The pinnacle of my educational experience was the Winter Institute. I have attended many different educational classes, conferences, and conventions — but nothing has rivaled the experience I had at ATSU’s Winter Institute. I really enjoyed the time with my peers, exchanging thoughts, experiences, and networking. What I enjoyed most of all was meeting the faculty and staff, learning from them in person, and seeing how down to earth and human they are. The passion they demonstrate for the AT profession as well as the positive change and impact they want to make in the field is truly inspiring. I love the fact that the faculty works symbiotically like a family and welcomed all of us as part of the A.T. Still family.

As I complete my DAT, I know I will have many opportunities to be an excellent leader due to what I learned in the program. I also know that this degree will open doors and many opportunities to pursue different endeavors. I am grateful to have been a part of this exceptional program that has allowed me to accomplish a life milestone. I appreciate the support from all the faculty and staff for the opportunity to become a better version of myself, both personally and professionally.
