Shadow

My journey to the Doctor of Athletic Training (DAT) program has been one of self-discovery and reinvigoration. After being a practicing clinician for 26 years, I found myself looking at an adjunct lecturer position that was gone. I started to reflect on what path my career should take. I contemplated doing a transition-to-teach program and realized that being an athletic trainer was very much a part of who I am. I want to continue to provide a strong foundation to the next generation of athletic trainers. I found the DAT program at A.T. Still University (ATSU) and was excited about the specialty tracks, including rehabilitation and education. I jumped in! This program opened my eyes to new ideas and possibilities. While I thought that I would learn some ways to translate my clinical experiences into authentic learning opportunities for future students, I have come away with so much more. It has had a profound impact on myself and my practice. I constantly learn new things that I use in my daily practice. My patients see a difference and benefit from a renewed commitment to providing patient-centered care. I have found how much I use pieces from the education track in educating my patients, as well as strengthening my role as a preceptor. I know now what my next path will be. I want to continue shaping the next generation of athletic trainers and supporting our preceptors, who are vital to providing quality clinical education opportunities to our students. I found something new in myself that was simmering on the surface but has been kindled into something more. The faculty is so supportive of the students and after the Winter Institute, I have come away with even more support from my classmates as we have learned and grown together. The Winter Institute experience helped me see that I am not alone in my journey and enhanced my passion for the profession. ATSU truly meets you where you’re AT!
