A.T. Still University-Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health (ATSU-ASDOH) hosts two on-campus clinics, the ATSU-ASDOH Dental Clinic and The Center for Advanced Oral Health, both of which are among the first university-affiliated dental clinics in Arizona. The ATSU-ASDOH Dental Clinic offers the same services as a private-practice general dentistry clinic, while The Center for Advanced Oral Health offers general dentistry and orthodontics, providing comprehensive dentistry for patients with complex medical conditions; intellectual, physical, and emotional disabilities; and other special healthcare needs. Our faculty dentists and student doctors provide personalized dental care at reduced costs.
ATSU-ASDOH educates students to become technically adept, caring, and compassionate dentists. Our dental faculty members are both general dentists and specialists, including experienced master clinicians and nationally recognized experts in their fields. ATSU-ASDOH faculty members work in dental teams with our students and graduate residents to provide quality, patient-centered care using new technologies and techniques. Our faculty members are role models who are committed to training students and residents to be compassionate dentists, focused on the health and well-being of our patients and our community.
Unlike other dental clinics in the community, our clinic is part of a dental teaching institution, ATSU-ASDOH. We have the clinical facilities and equipment to offer a range of dental services like many private dental offices; in fact, our faculty’s expertise and available technology actually allows us to offer more services in one location than many clinics.
Our ATSU-ASDOH campus clinics have 140 dental chairs, which are used by our faculty, students, and graduate residents in providing dental care for our patients each day. Each year, we have approximately 60,000 patient visits in our campus clinics, serving approximately 11,000 community members. We offer child and infant dental care, dental care for patients with special needs (e.g., patients with disabilities), and advanced surgical and non-surgical treatment options many clinics aren’t equipped or qualified to offer. We focus on providing comprehensive dental care services for our patients as well as a dental emergency clinic, which is open Mondays through Fridays during regular clinic hours.
As a teaching clinic, student dentists are the heart of our clinic at ATSU-ASDOH. Our student dentists work with supervising faculty to treat a wide variety of patient needs. All clinical experiences are monitored and checked by attending faculty. Student training involves hundreds of hours of patient observation and practice on human simulators—complete with realistic teeth, gums, tongue, and jaws.
The dental education and training program at ATSU-ASDOH is a four-year, graduate program that begins with a very competitive admissions process. Each year, ATSU-ASDOH has approximately 2,500 highly qualified applicants from across the country, who are competing for 78 positions in each year’s new dental class. This means all of our students have been very successful academically in their undergraduate college experiences and have exemplary backgrounds in community service and leadership. We prioritize selecting and training students who have demonstrated their commitment to our mission and values, who act with integrity, who are compassionate, respectful, community-minded, and who understand and value diversity and inclusion. In short, each year we select a diverse group of students who collectively represent the communities we serve and who truly care about others, and each year we graduate exceptional compassionate dentists who are prepared to serve and be leaders in their communities.
The four-year dental program trains students in the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to graduate as a compassionate and caring dentist who is ready to practice in the community. During the four-year program, our first-year students begin with learning experiences in the classroom, gaining foundational knowledge, developing clinical skills in our state-of-the-art simulation labs, building their patient management skills by observing and assisting in our clinics, working with their dental care team composed of faculty, professional staff, and upper level students, and participating in service-learning projects throughout the community. Over the next three years, our students continue to learn the essential skills necessary to transition into managing their own student practice, providing all aspects of general dentistry in our campus clinics during their third and fourth years. In addition, each of our students spend over half of their fourth year providing dental care in community health centers across the country, providing access to care for underserved patients.
The graduate residents in The Center for Advanced Oral Health are selected from other leading dental schools in the country and are pursuing further training in advanced general dentistry or orthodontics.
The dental clinics are state-of-the-art facilities, and we use the latest technology to provide a range of services unavailable at most private clinics. We offer periodontal therapy, and our laser therapy uses light energy to modify tooth, bone, and gum tissue.
Our students are among the first in the country to graduate with a certification in laser therapy. We also utilize advanced Cone Beam CT for diagnostic imaging, and our Advanced Care Clinic uses customized equipment to provide care to patients with special needs.
The ATSU-ASDOH Dental Clinic offers all the high-quality services you would expect from a private-practice clinic, plus many advanced and specialized services you won’t find at other clinics.
It starts with you
At our clinic, prevention is integral to our philosophy of care. Our faculty and student doctors want to keep you smiling! Prevention includes steps you can take at home, as well as cleanings, exams, and regular check-up visits with our dental team. We are your partner in ensuring your oral health.
Checkups & cleanings
Regular dental visits help maintain proper oral health and let us correct little problems before they get big. Your first visit to our clinic will include a screening to gather the necessary information to advise you of your treatment needs. Subsequent visits might include a comprehensive exam, specialty consultations, formal treatment plan presentation, and other restorative and preventive care. Fees for our services are approximately one-half of the fees charged by a typical private practice located in the Phoenix area.
Daily home care
Good oral health begins at home, and the goal is to remove plaque from your teeth. Plaque causes tooth decay and gum disease. The ADA recommends brushing twice daily with an ADA-accepted fluoride toothpaste. Clean between your teeth each day with floss or an inter-dental cleaner to remove decay-causing bacteria toothbrush bristles can’t reach.
Infant care
Good dental care begins when the first tooth comes in! Proper dental care is part of healthy growth. Bring your infant (less than 24 months old) to the clinic on our special free screening days to receive a free general screening and tips on how to keep your baby’s teeth and mouth healthy.
Our oral health partnership
Regular visits to our clinic let us identify and treat everyday problems before they become big ones. Our approach is to partner with you in the maintenance of your oral health. General treatments usually fix problems like cavities (tooth decay) and gum disease.
Dental implants
A dental implant connects to the upper (maxilla) or lower (mandible) bone in your jaw. The implant is a base for individual replacement of teeth, bridges, or a denture. To be able to have an implant, you need healthy gums and adequate bone. Integration of the implants into the bone helps your replacement teeth feel more natural, and some people also find the secure fit more comfortable than conventional substitutes.
Dental veneers
Dental veneers (sometimes called porcelain veneers or dental porcelain laminates) are wafer-thin, custom-made shells of tooth-colored material that are bonded to the front of a tooth to improve its color, shape, size, or length.
Fillings
Fillings are often necessary to repair worn, damaged, or decayed teeth. A small amount of the affected tooth is removed and replaced with a durable material to prevent further damage and restore the tooth’s strength.
Root canals
A root canal saves a tooth that would otherwise be extracted. The unhealthy nerve, which causes the problem, is removed, allowing the tooth to be retained for a lifetime in many cases. Using modern anesthetic techniques, patients are kept comfortable during the procedure.
Everyone deserves a winning smile
We help you create or restore your smile. Dentistry’s many advances give our team tools and techniques to repair stained, chipped, or misshapen teeth to let you smile with confidence.

Orthodontics
Orthodontic treatment corrects crowded teeth, extra teeth, missing teeth, or jaws out of alignment (over/underbites). Most frequently, this involves the use of fixed braces for children and adults, and retainers. The ADA recommends all children receive an orthodontic evaluation by age 7. The corrections achieved with orthodontic therapy improve bone structure, correct misalignments, and restore your beautiful smile.
The Imaging Center at the Dental Clinic uses Cone Beam CT technology, an all-in-one solution for accurate diagnosis, implant planning, and interpretation of a wide range of anomalies. The exams are quick, painless, and cost effective. Data can be shared with other medical professionals, as well as patients.

Going the extra mile
Proper dental care is every person’s right. Our Special Care Clinic, the only such facility in Arizona, provides dental care to patients with special needs and their families. Our dental teams are trained, equipped, and capable of providing dental services to most any patient with disability or specialized needs, as well as immunocompromised patients. In addition, our clinic can manage referrals from private practice-based dentists and physicians in the Phoenix metro area.
Laser therapy: State-of-the-art treatment
Lasers use light energy to modify hard tissue (tooth and bone) and gum tissue. ATSU-ASDOH is one of the first dental schools in the U.S. to provide students with training in laser therapy.
Periodontal therapy
We use state-of-the-art technology to gently and safely remove infected gum tissue with little or no discomfort, destroying the bacteria and restoring your gums to perfect health. The gum tissue that supports your teeth is in a fairly delicate balance, and gum diseases, like gingivitis and periodontitis, threaten the health of your mouth and the rest of your body.
In keeping with ATSU’s founding mission to care for the underserved and challenging-to-serve, the 11,000-square-foot clinic is Arizona’s first to offer the expertise and technology to treat patients with complicating factors, such as cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, bariatric needs, cardiac disease, hemophilia and other blood disorders, kidney/liver disease, HIV/AIDS, as well as intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Dental practices may not be set up to address complex medical conditions that require advanced care dentistry. Extra time is needed to consult with fellow physicians and research medical and personal histories, thereby limiting a staff member’s ability to serve other patients. That is where The Center for Advanced Oral Health can help.
In one location with one appointment, patients are connected with the advanced care dentistry they need. There’s no need to search out and refer to multiple specialists because The Center for Advanced Oral Health brings all the expertise on-site. These world-class teaching specialists are top dental professionals, supported by the nation’s premier students and residents, who address each patient’s needs in one location for maximum efficiency and convenience.
The Center for Advanced Oral Health offers assistance to dentists with specialized, high-risk cases while ensuring they remain the primary dental care providers. Ongoing communication and coordination keep primary care dentists informed and involved with each patient’s progress.
The Center for Advanced Oral Health’s world-class teaching specialists have extensive training and are supported by the nation’s premier students and residents. Specialists have the advanced training, expertise, and resources–all under one roof–to address each case for maximum efficiency and convenience.
